Bacopa (also known as Brahmi) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine as a sedative, brain tonic, and anti-epileptic for hundreds of years. Bacopa is excellent for addressing anxiety, while simultaneously enhancing cognitive function. For individuals in high stress, high-performance situations, Bacopa is key. It can also be very helpful for people who have learning disabilities and for those experiencing a mental decline, such as the elderly. There is recent research that suggests it may be used, thanks in part, to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, to boost memory, learning, and concentration, to soothe anxiety and relieve depression.
Bacopa’s antioxidant activity can have an impact on aiding cognition, and bacosides, identified as the main active component in Bacopa, is responsible for its other activities such as aiding in the repair of damaged neurons. Research suggests it may prevent DNA damage in the brain. Bacopa may have a stimulating effect on the thyroid and has been shown to increase the production of thyroxine (T4) a thyroid hormone, which may be beneficial for fatigue sufferers, despite its sedating qualities.
